On the 10th of December, the Sweden branch of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI-S) presented an opportunity to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights with international artists.

Besides Master of Ceremony Samson Mande, European Human Rights Hero awardee, several renown human rights activists honored the event. Norsang Drikung, leader of Tibetan Community in Sweden and Dr. Elfatih Shora, member of International Rescue Nubia organization spoke about issues demanding solutions in their countries, while Stig Johnell from Amnesty International took up several situations worldwide, including Sweden.

Honorary guest speaker Mrs. Jacqueline Mukangira, Ambassador of Republic of Rwanda to Sweden and Nordic Countries highlighted the evening, who told stories of how her country has risen from genocide to a safe and prosperous land, setting a good example of finding constructive solutions to various problems.

The audience was entertained by a colorful concert of classical, pop and world music, dance from Africa, Asia, America and Europe. In the artist line-up, different ages, races, music styles and most of the continents were represented.

Latvian viola/piano duo Ineta & Milda Zigure gave the concert a very aesthetic opening. Mrs Sonoko Kase's students from Östermalm Private Music School performed Japanese children songs, piano and ballet pieces. Venezuelan born soprano Gabriela Gonzáles-Toledo, who is also an active lecturer in Latin American music and culture, entertained with beautiful opera and musical songs. Hungarian folk singer Andrea Gerak's choice of Romany National Anthem was perfect for the occasion and really hit home to the audience. Swedish singer-songwriter Mimmi Siegel sweetened the mood while rock singer Lizette& and Nsako Afrodans, a group performing tribal music and dance from Uganda broke the floor with high energy sounds and moves.

The attendees appreciated the international diversity, the very informative speeches, high artistic quality and the relaxed atmosphere of the gala. The event concluded with the participating representatives expressing their intentions to further co-operate in order to make human rights a reality.

Psychiatry: Fraud in the Name of "Science and Humanity"

On Saturday, 20/September, the XIVth World Congress of Psychiatry opens its doors in Prague, Chech Republic. Their motto is "Science and Humanism: For a Person-Centered Psychiatry" What a blatant lie!

First of all, psychiatry is NOT a science. For what is science? Let's see a few definitions:

"a systematically organized body of knowledge on any subject"
"the study of the physical and natural world and phenomena, especially by using systematic observation and experiment"
"the state of knowing : knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding"
"knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through scientific method"

How does this apply to psychiatry?

"In 1886, Emil Kraepelin, the undisputed founder of modern psychiatry as a medical specialty and science, declared: "Our science has not arrived at a consensus on even its most fundamental principles, let alone on appropriate ends or even on the means to those ends." Eighty years later, the encyclopedic American Handbook of Psychiatry opened with this statement: "Perhaps no other field of human endeavor is so ... difficult to define as that of psychiatry." Andrew Lakoff, a professor of sociology at the University of California in San Diego, airily opines: "Two centuries after its invention, psychiatry's illnesses have neither known causes nor definitive treatments."

Theodor Meynert, an Austrian psychiatrist stated in his textbook in 1984 that
"The reader will find no other definition of 'Psychiatry' in this book but the one given on the title page: Clinical Treatise on Diseases of the Forebrain. The historical term for psychiatry, i.e., 'treatment of the soul,' implies more than we can accomplish, and transcends the bounds of accurate scientific investigation."

Clearly put. A "science" that is illogical already in its name! How can one then expect logical principles, theories and methods from such a branch?

Here are some examples of methods used in psychiatry:

This event was reported in a letter to the editor of Psychiatric
News, by Natalie Shainess, recounting a personal encounter with such
"research" at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Atlanta, in May, 1978. "Arriving late in the evening at the Omni Hotel," she writes, "I was unpacking when my phone rang at about 11:30 p.m. Wondering who might be calling at that hour, I picked up the phone receiver to hear a man's voice say, 'Would you like us to send up a gentleman to pleasure you?" Offended by this offer, Dr. Shainess interrogated the hotel manager about the incident, only to learn that "a member of the American Psychiatric Association was conducting a piece of sex research and had arranged for 25 women arriving alone to receive this call." By representing himself as a scientific investigator, this unidentified psychiatrist deceived not only his victims, but also the hotel manager."

"The low level of intellectual effort was shocking. Diagnoses were developed by majority vote on the level we would use to choose a restaurant. You feel like Italian, I feel like Chinese, so let’s go to the cafeteria. Then it’s typed into a computer." - a psychologist, about the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders

But let's assume that indeed, in the field of psychiatry there exist laboratory tests and other means, generally used in real sciences like medicine, to observe phenomena and find solutions to problems.

We see publications and news all the time about a new psychiatric drug being developed, a "new pattern of the brain function" discovered, that "recent study shows that substance ABC is present/missing in the brain of patients suffering from XYZ mental disorder. Scientists add that developing a new medicine will give hope to these patients", and so on.

I am not a physician, chemist, neurologist or any of the like, but one doesn't need 3 university degrees to ask this simple question: how do they prove that a mental condition (i.e. feeling depressed, sad, stressed, etc) is caused by the cherished term of "chemical imbalance" and not the way around?

Well, they don't. Plainly by their authoritarian powers, psychiatrists claim such "truths", lobbying in the media, governments, official medicine et al, to spread obviously irrational statements, "search results".

How can one believe that a woman who has lost her family, is unhappy because of a chemical imbalance in her brain, therefore she needs to take pills as a treatment?

How can one believe that an overworked manager is stressed because of certain substance in his brain and it can be corrected with a drug? Will he be not overworked any more?

How can one believe that a lively child has to be "cooled down" with drugs, because he has a "deficiency"? (As a personal experience: when my son was 6, he was diagnosed with ADHD, because he got bored of the stupid questions of the psychologist testing him if he was matured enough to go to school, and instead of sitting nicely on the chair through 45 minutes, wanted to go out and play with the other kids...)

It's very easy to believe such idiocies, one just needs to stop thinking for himself and believe everything the alleged experts have to say.

It is also interesting to observe that all these "scientific studies" lead to developing newer and newer drugs, to "handle" certain "mental disorders". If you are curious about how the giant pharmaceutical companies have a vast amount of power to cook the results of drug tests and make researchers and even the FDA itself bow to their will and how they also use their power and money to silence their critics, just do a google search on these two terms: psychiatry and pharmaceutical industry.

This way it is no wonder that the upcoming congress of psychiatrists is sponsored by 4 drug companies: Lundbeck, Lilly, Pfizer and Krka. It would be a fantastic naivety to assume that the manufacturers and sellers of psychiatric drugs finance this event merely out of humanity, with the glorious intent of helping Mankind to get rid of unwanted mental conditions...

Lundbeck for instance, made donations of DKK 281 million in 2007 for scientific researches. That is to say they gave this much money for studies that will prove that an effective drug is needed to handle certain problem. And guess who will produce and sell that drug?

A key section of their website is about finances, inviting investors to this highly profitable business. Money, money, money...

After looking at only a very few aspects of how "scientific" psychiatry, let's see quickly what about humanity.

Instead of a long essay here, please remember One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest which was not Hemingway's artistic exaggeration or imagination of what was going on in psychiatry institutes - and sadly what is still the case today.

But by now, psychiatry emphasizes the use of a "more human" method: giving drugs to the patients is much milder.

Is it really? Taking a look at these short videos on real stories of children who got psychiatric drugs will tell more than would a thousand words.

I hope that for the occasion of their great gathering, this writing helps you to classify modern psychiatry as it is: a harmful pseudo-science.

WANTED

STORY: A wimpy accountant, prone to "panic attacks," is drawn into a band of cosmically-sanctioned assasins so that he can rectify the balance in the world.

MESSAGE: There may be more talent and ability within you than you've tapped. Willingness to go in a new direction, willingness to stand up against your enemies, intelligence, commitment, industriousness, toughness, faith, ability to see the truth, ability to exploit an enemy's weaknesses, believing in your own abilities, skill, using communication to gain support, bending the rules for a just cause -- all win the day. Your integrity is more important that your immediate life.

WIN: The hero was able to tap into the inner strengths we all possess. The hero thought his superior abilities were a mental illness, a common misconception in our world of low expectations. He gave up taking psychiatric medicine to cure what wasn't an illness, which would be a good idea in general in society, since all psychiatric labels are false and not based on science. In order to gain the skills he needed, he applied himself industriously to the learning process. It was fitting that those with a heavy-handed approach to correcting bad behavior would be ill-fated. There was a sense, in the movie, of a higher power (called, generically, "Fate.")

LOSE: The ability to bend the path of a bullet, or leap further than humanly possible are spiritual abilities, not abilities coming from genetic predisposition. Beating someone up carries with it the penalty of unwittingly introducing unwanted positive suggestions (like hypnotism, but with pain and threat as the "operator") so a person could just as likely become tough or crazy. The healing baths may have done wonders as to physical healing, but there was no effective mental healing. In other words, if we could beat the coward, or other imperfections, out of people, then our schools would be beat fests -- but that doesn't work in the real world. His handling of his pestering boss and false friend involved anger and violence, when neither of those two would be needed, and they undermined his control, showing a lack of responsibility. The movie says that it is better for society and Mankind that some people be assasinated. Whereas it is true that we should not be bullied, and sometimes a person needs to be put in their place, it is often best that a person (such as in the case of a harping boss) speaks to the boss or changes jobs. Using the bullet as the first offense when other, milder forms of persuasion have not been tried, is inhumane. The other fact that isn't realized is that a person who does harm will begin to limit themself, and will slowly (or quickly) assasinate themself, because on some level they know they are destructive. The movie suggests that a higher power sought heavy-handed justice in order to "restore balance." Our world has imbalance as a necessity to the game of life, and our thrust is not toward "balance" but towards better and better survival. At the end of the movie, the audience is made wrong for not using their untapped powers to do large deeds in the world (this from a guy who murders others); this could have been done more in terms of encouragement to take more responsibility. Disrespect of animals, namely rats. No sense of life beyond death.

EFFECT ON ME: I was offended, as I do seek to better myself and use my talents to better the world. I felt elated and dirty and confused, because vast ability (a good thing) was positioned with murder and destruction (a bad thing). It made me want to be a stronger person who stands up for what I believe, and who stands up to those who try to tear me down.

Review of MADE OF HONOR

MADE OF HONOR

STORY: A womanizer finally wakes up to the fact that he's in love with his best friend. He wants to marry her, but he's too late; she asks him to be her Maid of Honor. He agrees in an attempt to win her back.

MESSAGE: The true love you seek may be right in front of you. Commitment, marriage and fidelity are worth fighting for. The "rules" bachelors tend to follow are a trap, which prevent one from achieving true happiness. Friendship and rapport and "feeling comfortable as oneself when with another" are all parts of true love. Real, honest communication means more to a relationship than winning manly competitions of strength and endurance, than one's high station in life or than one's vast wealth. It is never too late to right a wrong.

WIN: The hero did do the correct steps of deciding that commitment to the girl was the right thing, telling his friends and her; and he did take the job of Maid of Honor and made up for not noticing her by doing a good job. He was active in sports. It is refreshing for a movie to laud fidelity over promiscuity. Sweet moments of friendship were treasured, like sharing each others' cake. (as opposed to some movies that say, "remember that time we got drunk and...")

LOSE: Does size really matter that much, when love is a spiritual bond between two beings? (Fortunately, a small scene.) As dramatic as it may be to pull someone out of their wedding when they're in front of the preacher, there is a lot of destruction in this action -- know the cost of a wedding in terms of time, money and family reputation?

EFFECT ON ME: It made me feel, even more than I do, that my own husband is a special treasure.

I think this is very good advice - not that we cannot learn from past experience, but I have noticed that people tend to get "set in their ways" as they get older, and regaining the brilliance and bright outlook of youth is really valuable. Young people seem more willing to experience life - to look and see what is there.

That's what I really love about Dianetics - it allows us to shed the past upsets and failures, so we can look life from a new frame of mind again, more willing to experience and live it.

SPIRITUAL EFFECT OF MOVIES

Movies are often judged for their story structure or acting ability or violence content. An avid movie-goer, I have been blogging for quite some time giving movie reviews about the effect of a movie spiritually. I summarize the story and theme, then give how it was accurate or beneficial spiritually. After that, I say where it damages life or where it falls short of truth. Beyond that, I say what effect the movie had on me.

For example, if a movie had the theme that life is bad, you can't change it and then you die, this would be rated as a negative film. Whereas a movie that promotes the inner strengths in us all to achieve good things past all odds -- that would be a win.

Movies do promote things and our culture is emulated by others based on what a movie promotes. How many times has a hero in a film picked up a glass of alcohol for celebration or romance? How often does a hero engage in speed dating with overnight stays? Is religion made to look like a sane activity or like an illusory fanaticism by a particular film?

The Problem:

43% of the world's chocolate comes from the Ivory Coast. It is estimated that 90% of the labor force in the chocolate plantations in the Ivory Coast are actually slaves.

The chocolate we eat is made by slave children.

Because the cocoa is mixed together in the market, there is a bit of slavery in every chocolate bar.

These are children - working 80 to 100 hours per week. Beaten, whipped, unable to return to their families.

The Solution:

Boycott chocolate.

Or order chocolate from Tony's Chocolonely.

For Halloween, give children copies of the booklet "What Are Human Rights?" by Youth for Human Rights. At the very least, do not give them chocolate, unless you order it from Tony's.

Current Scene is looking for stories on human rights for their "good news and stuff you can do something about" online newspaper.

There is an interesting story there now about Bodies: The Exhibition which is a pretty horrific display. On the upside, however, instead of just getting the bad news of the situation, you can get educated, then contact your congressman - as there is legislation in the works to put an end to this kind of display.

I think it would be cool if we all submitted great articles about really important things. I, for one, have seen enough stories about Lindsey Lohan and Britney Spears to last me the rest of my life! Time for some real news that actually means something to me!

The Way to Happiness Outdoors Club is Going for the Gold!

Outdoors Club camel racing champs Dick Sullivan & Ross Pula

The Way to Happiness Outdoors Club will return this September to the International Camel Races in Virginia City, Nevada, and we are going for the Gold Medal! Camel racing in historic Virginia City has been a tradition since the first races were organized by gold miners back in the 1860’s.

Last September, members of The Way to Happiness Outdoors Club competed in the races. Ross Pula and Dick Sullivan won silver medals: Ross won racing a camel and Dick won racing an ostrich!

Throughout the 3-day event, our club distributed thousands of special-edition copies of The Way to Happiness® booklet* and we were featured in the Race Day Parade. A representative of the local chamber of commerce stated, "I think that every man, woman and child should read this booklet." At the close of this event, we left an additional 4500 copies for distribution at the chamber’s visitor’s center.

There's quite a bit of news coverage about the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast area this week. It's been 2 years since Katrina hit the area. My husband and I went down there for a few days to contribute to the Volunteer Minister relief effort. I have to say it was one of the turning points in my life. Seeing all the devastation was a jolt in reality but seeing how people were helping each other renewed my recognition of the goodness of Man. One good thing that came out of the tragedy was the birth of the Biloxi Mission. They continue the work started by the Volunteer Ministers 2 years ago.

I visited an Amnesty International booth at a festival recently and picked up some cool stickers for their youth program. It was just a cute little sticker, with the Amnesty International logo and website link for the youth sign up.

Well, on the Metro last night, there were 4 teens who were talking, and they seemed bright enough, but were just gossiping about other kids and it was clear from their conversation that they simply aren't challenged in life. They seemed bright - but vacant, really.

I gave them the stickers - they'd never heard of Amnesty International (they must have been 16 - 18), nor had they heard of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. That surprised me as well, really.

I told them a little about both activities - and they did seem interested!

Perhaps no one has even given them the idea that they could do something to make the world a brighter, better place to be. I'm hoping they sign up and next time I bump into them, I'll overhear conversation a little more worth overhearing than gossip about their acquaintances!

Currently, up to nine women and two men in Iran are under sentence of execution by stoning, including one woman who was convicted of adultery and who claimed she was forced into prostitution. Various human rights organizations, human rights lawyers, activists, and concerned individuals have called on the Iranian government to abolish the barbaric and violent practice of stoning.

We hope that you, too, will join us in this important effort by urging the Iranian government to commute all sentences of death by stoning and ask Iranian officials to abolish the practice of stoning for ever.

The act of punishing people by stoning them to death in today's world is such an unacceptable and inhuman act of brutality that even the members of the government are ashamed of admitting to doing it, and have publicly denied that this merciless practice takes place in Iran. Despite the government's denial, this penalty is a sanctioned part of the Islamic Penal Code of Iran and it is being carried out without any legal obstacles.

We, the undersigned are extremely alarmed that the punishment of stoning to death has been adopted by the country's legal system as a reasonable and acceptable form of retribution. Although, in December of 2002, your Excellency placed a ban on carrying out this type of sentence, in reality stonings have continued to take place in different parts of the country. In May 2006, in the city of Mashhad, a woman Mahboubeh M. and a man Abbas H. were both stoned to death.

Prior to carrying out the stoning, prior to their death, these two people were treated as if they were dead. In accordance with the Islamic tradition, their bodies were washed as if they were lifeless corpses, and wrapped in the kafan or white shroud. Then their wrapped bodies were buried in the ground, Mahboubeh's body was buried up to her shoulders, and Abbas was buried up to his waist. The crowd, who had gathered to stone the two to death slowly as specified by law, then targeted them with their stones. All this took place without any mention of it in the public media of the country.

Apart from the above mentioned two cases, at least eleven people, nine women and two men as listed below have been condemned to be stoned to death. Their situation is grave. It is also possible that there are other people who have been condemned to death by stoning and we are not aware of it.

According to Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, signed and ratified by Iran in 1975, "in countries which have not abolished the death penalty, sentence of death may be imposed only for the most serious crimes". Article 7 of the same covenant states that "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment." Despite ratifying the above covenant, the Islamic penal code gives the judges the right to sentence the accused to death by stoning even when the crime of adultery has not been proved according to the same penal code's standards and requirements. Article #105 of the Islamic penal code gives the judges the absolute right to condemn the accused to death by stoning solely based on the judge's subjective interpretation of the case.

We the undersigned demand and stress the need to change all laws contrary to human rights. We believe there are no crimes that deserve the punishment of stoning to death and we insist that this inhumane practice should be abolished forever.

An interesting bill is set before the President today, about protecting animals during emercency situations, such as hurricane evacuations.

WASHINGTON - Congress called for emergency preparedness plans that include helping individuals and families with pets, under legislation sent Wednesday to President Bush.

It was during Hurricane Katrina that people saw the images of anguished pet owners asked to abandon their animals to gain shelter or be rescued.

"It became evident during Hurricane Katrina, when asked to choose between abandoning their pets (and) their own personal safety, many pet owners chose to risk their lives and remain with their pets, and some of them perished," said Rep. Christopher Shays (news, bio, voting record), R-Conn.

The Invisible Mexicans of Deer Canyon
Over two thousand laborers, mostly from central and southern Mexico, live without running water, electricity or sanitation in the clandestine canyons of northern San Diego County. Cost of living in the area is exorbitant so the migrants have built shacks made of plastic tarps, cardboard and scrap lumber. They live outdoors hidden in hillsides and dense vegetation. They provide a cheap source of labor for the rapidly growing local neighborhoods.

Frey spent over a year living with and getting to know the immigrants featured in the film. He followed them to work at construction sites, local farms and five star resorts. He accompanied them to Sunday services at a clandestine chapel built by the migrants deep in the heart of the canyon. He tracked their desperate circumstances as local citizens and law enforcement continued to demolish the migrant shacks and push them further from local neighborhoods. "The Invisible Mexicans of Deer Canyon" is a never before seen expose of migrant life and the untold side of the immigration debate.

The film is now available on DVD and can only be purchased through non-profit organizations that are concerned with the issues of immigration, poverty, human rights and education. Fifty percent of all proceeds benefit participating organizations.

"The Invisible Mexicans of Deer Canyon" will be screened for Mexican and U.S. lawmakers as part of a binational conference on immigration in Mexico City October 13, 2006. The film will also screen for the National Center for Farmworker Health conference as well as The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice in November 2006

(Jakarta, September 6, 2006) – The Jakarta regional government has been forcibly evicting tens of thousands of the capital’s urban poor from their homes, often leaving them homeless and destitute, Human Rights Watch said in a new report released today.

The 115-page report, “Condemned Communities: Forced Evictions in Jakarta,” describes the government’s excessive use of force to clear out urban slums. It draws on numerous evictees’ accounts of government security forces beating or mistreating them before destroying their homes and possessions. Many residents say they were given so little warning before their homes were razed that they did not have enough time to collect their belongings. Others describe how security forces opened fire on communities and set buildings alight while people were still inside.

YOUTH FOR HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNATIONAL BEGINS ITS 3RD ANNUAL WORLD TOUR TO PROMOTE THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Youth for Human Rights International launched its 3rd annual World Tour this weekend as part of their campaign to make human rights a fact through implementing human rights education around the world.

The urgent need to make all nations honor and enforce the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is demonstrated by the fact that today there are 100 million children living on the street and 115 million primary school-aged youth denied schooling. It is further emphasized by the estimated 1.5 million children trafficked into slavery over the past year.

Youth for Human Rights International believes that educating today’s youth on the Universal Declaration is the key to guaranteeing these rights. To bring each the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration to life for young people and adults alike, Youth for Human Rights and the Church of Scientology International have teamed up to produce 30 public service announcements.

The first 3 of these PSAs were released in 2005 and can be seen on the Youth for Human Rights web site or downloaded as podcasts.

The tour will consist of 30 events, each one releasing one of the 30 PSAs, in cities in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Istanbul, United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

A wild bear crossed the Alps and found its way into Germany - the first in nearly 200 years.

The bear hadn't hurt any people, but it apparently killed a sheep and ate a pet guinea pig. It was killed. I appreciate the response from Hubert Weinzierl:

"That is the stupidest of all solutions," Hubert Weinzierl, president of the German Environmental Protection Association, told reporters. "In other countries, humans and bears coexist in relative harmony. Only in Germany would he be liquidated."

The Iranian courts are deciding an appeal right now - a woman named Nazanin faces execution for defending herself against a rapist.

If she had been raped, she could have been imprisoned (unless four male witnesses to the rape stood up in her defense - not very likely!) and now she is sentenced to death for trying to protect herself and her niece.

Several celebrity guests—including Joey Travolta and Grounded for Life’s Lynsey Bartilson—will certainly be an audience that any filmmaker would be proud to entertain. Even if they’re 10 years old.

The festival will highlight films from Uganda, Switzerland, Turkey, Canada, South Africa, and many others, dealing with a wide spectrum of human rights issues from around the world. The typical age of these human rights crusaders? Between 9 and 20 years old.

The inspiration for this festival came in form of a groundbreaking phenomenon, "United," a human rights music video that has swept dozens of film festivals worldwide, winning top awards and stunning audiences with its powerful human rights message. The film is now allegedly a major contender for the 2006 Academy Award nomination ballot.

And get this: the director was only 19 years old.

Taron Lexton, the aforementioned award-winning director, is a graduate of the Los Angeles Film School, and a lifelong human rights crusader. He is also the son of Mary Shuttleworth, who heads the Youth for Human Rights movement. "United" was truly a joint project between mother and son, and now serves as the centerpiece for YHRI’s global human rights education campaign. In a few short months, it has created such a stir that King Osamarimba of Ghana proclaimed, “'United' is easily one of the most important human rights films of the last decade.”

Lexton and Shuttleworth now hope to utilize that success to create an entirely new phenomenon: the YHRI UNITED Film Festival.

Los Angeles Film School will host the film festival on October 2nd, which will include a daylong workshop starting at 4pm and screenings. Scores of filmmakers and youth leaders from around the world will join local kids at this history-making event.

Following the workshop there will be a dinner, and at 7pm the screening of selected short films and Awards Ceremony for the winning entries.

“I’m thrilled,” says Shuttleworth. “A true improvement in the global human rights scene can sometimes seem impossible. But if it can be done at all, it will start with these children.”

Youth for Human Rights International is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to educate youth in human rights so they become valuable advocates for tolerance and peace.

Silent Birth

Religions have been attacked since the beginning of time, I believe. Rumors start and quickly grow to obscene proportions.

Regarding Scientology birth practices, "Scientology silent birth", I have read astonishing claims in the media - that are, of course, not true.

Here is what the Church of Scientology has to say about Silent Birth:

What is a quiet or silent birth?

Having a quiet, gentle birth is all about providing the best possible environment for the birthing mother and her new baby.

It is labor and delivery done in a calm and loving environment and with no-spoken words by everyone attending as much as possible. Chatty doctors and nurses, shouts to “PUSH, PUSH” and loud or laughing remarks to “encourage” are the types of things that are meant to be avoided.

As L. Ron Hubbard, Founder of Dianetics and Scientology, wrote, “Everyone must learn to say nothing within the expectant mother’s hearing during labor and delivery.” And, “A woman who wants her child to have the best possible chance will find a doctor who will agree to keep quiet especially during the delivery, and who will insist upon silence being maintained in the hospital delivery room as far as it is humanly possible.”

Does this mean that a mother cannot scream or moan at all?

Of course they can make noises — the point of silent birth is NO WORDS. This is a principle of Dianetics and to fully understand why, read the book Dianetics the Modern Science of Mental Health, by L. Ron Hubbard. It is words that are the culprit. Outside of not speaking, the objective is generally to have as peaceful and relaxing an environment as possible for the mother and child. It is doubtful that any woman could give birth without making any noise at all.

Mothers naturally want to give their baby the best possible start in life and thus keep the birth as quiet as possible.

Does the application of these principles preclude a mother from using medicines?

The Church has no policy against the use of medicines to help a person with a physical situation. This, too, is up to the mother and her doctor.

What does Scientology say about the raising of children?

L. Ron Hubbard has written a great deal about raising children. In Scientology, children are recognized as people who should be given all the respect and love granted adults.

Scientologists believe children should be encouraged to contribute to family life and not just be “seen and not heard” as the old saying goes. Children are spiritual beings, and as such they need to exchange with those around them in order to thrive and live productive, happy lives. Most children raised in good Scientology homes are above average in ability and quickly begin to understand how and why people act as they do. Life thus becomes a lot happier and safer for them.

Do Scientologists use medical doctors?

Of course. The Church of Scientology has always had the firm policy of not diagnosing or treating the sick. Medical doctors are trained to deal with the physical aspects of illness and injury. A Scientologist with a physical condition is always advised to seek and obtain the needed examination and treatment of a qualified medical professional. Once under medical treatment, a Scientologist then addresses his illness or injury with auditing to handle any spiritual trauma or other factors connected with the physical condition which may have predisposed him to illness or injury.

There are also many medical doctors who are Scientologists themselves.

Original hip-hop music video launches a countywide effort to curb violence against children.
Hollywood — Citizens from Santa Clarita to South Central LA rallied with celebrities, artists and concerned community leaders at the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre Friday, 10 December, the 56th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The annual event raised funds to export UNITED, a hip-hop music video that teaches human rights to local school children.

UNITED is the creation of a mother and son team, Mary Shuttleworth, Director of Youth for Human Rights International, and her 19-year-old son, up and coming film director, Taron Lexton. The two embarked on a 45-day, 13-country world tour promoting youth for human rights activities. Lexton captured universal images to tell a story that transpires on a downtown LA playground. The music video made its debut at the United Nations in New York at an international youth summit bringing together youth delegates from 22 nations. It has since been translated into 15 languages.

Councilman Martin Ludlow’s Chief of Staff accepts a Human Rights Ambassador award on the Councilman’s behalf presented by Erika Christiansen. Human Rights Ambassador Awards from the International Foundation of Human Rights and Tolerance were presented for the first time at the event. Film actress Erika Christensen, who has a cameo in UNITED, presented Los Angeles City Councilman Martin Ludlow (10th District) with an Ambassador award for his efforts to make Los Angeles a world-class human rights city through promoting education and reducing the crime rate in his district.

Focusing on the international tragedy of children forced to work as sex slaves, actress Carina Rico acknowledged the work of Marisa Ugarte. Ms. Ugarte has brought sanctuary to hundreds of young girls whose lives had dead-ended in illegal brothels in Southern California after being smuggled across the border.

The third award was presented to Ms. Karen Hubbard, the founder and director of “Bless the Children”, an impressive international relief group that is based in Florida. Through the efforts of Ms. Hubbard, “Bless the Children” has in the last few years donated 220 sea containers of humanitarian aid valued at more than $65m to needy children around the world.

New Delhi — Speaking at the 1st Annual Youth for Human Rights International Summit 2005 at the Satya Sai International Centre in New Delhi, India, the former President of India, the Honourable Sh. K.R. Narayanan, has called for children throughout the world to be educated in human rights. "By imparting these values to our youth, we help develop today’s and tomorrow's advocates for justice, tolerance and peace," he said, stressing the need to follow the path of Mahatma Gandhi.

Co-sponsored by Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) and the Human Rights Department of the Church of Scientology International (CSI), the summit also marked the release in Hindi and Urdu of YHRI’s illustrated booklet for children, What Are Human Rights?

The international summit brought together YHRI’s Executive Director Mary Shuttleworth; CSI’s Human Rights Director Leisa Goodman; the first woman Air Marshall in the world, Mrs. P. Bandhopadhyay; famous Bollywood actress and human rights activist Nandita Das and 500 children -- all for one purpose: human rights education.

The event was supported by Friends of the United Nations, the European Foundation for Human Rights and Tolerance, various Rotary Clubs in the U.S. and the Society for Protection of Human Rights, New Delhi.

Youth delegates from 15 countries including India and neighboring countries Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan spoke to attendees about their experiences with human rights. Some of the topics that the delegates touched upon included child soldiers, human trafficking, free speech and the right to education. The message conveyed to both the youth and adults in attendance was that through education about human rights, as described in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, youth can be empowered as advocates of tolerance and peace.

Several embassies were represented with flags proudly displayed by the assembled youth delegates. The award-winning human rights music video, ‘UNITED’ was shown and made a big impression on the school children. Many children came, after the program culminated in a climax of singing and celebration of the ‘UNITED’ songs, and asked how they too could join the youth group making a difference by understanding and practicing their human rights.

Celebrity and activist Nandita Das called upon the youth gathered at the program, and around the world, to take the personal initiative vital to creating awareness of the need to make a difference in life. Nandita spoke from the heart reaching many of the assembled delegates, school children and adults with her message that human rights receive the attention they deserve.

Youth for Human Rights International's visit to India is the fifth stop on its United Tour, the theme of which is "Youth United for Positive Change!" The tour has travelled from the United States to Mexico, Venezuela, the United Kingdom and Ghana. The tour will continue on to Thailand and then back to the United States for its Annual International Youth Summit being held in Los Angeles, California, October 1 - 3. Teens in dozens of countries who work with Youth for Human Rights International, an educational program adopted by the Church of Scientology International, were publicly honored at a special service at the Church of Scientology of New York headquarters last weekend.

(PRWEB) May 29, 2005 -- The group's work in human right's education was commended in a letter from Ms. Imaculee Ilibigaze, an executive in the United Nations Development Program. Ms. Ilibigaze is a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, and now helps the UN evaluate the effectiveness of their programs.

The letter he presented read, in part:

"The youth that are part of your organization deserve all possible help and encouragement in their work in their home countries.

A statement by Edward G. Ezrailson, Ph.D., at the time of Ms. Yates’ trial, warned the drugs she was prescribed caused involuntary intoxication, leading to the murder of her children. Last year, Dena Schlosser, who had been prescribed two psychotropic drugs known to cause violent behavior, killed her 10-month daughter by severing her arms. Since September 2002, the FDA has been issuing more and more warnings about psychiatric drugs, side effects that both psychiatrists and manufacturers have underplayed or withheld. Additional warnings have now been added to antidepressants, antipsychotic drugs and stimulants.

Psychiatrist Nancy Mullan, who practices non-drug alternatives to health care problems, warned, “There is a terrific plummet in hormones when giving birth which needs to be normalized. Blood sugar imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, low adrenal gland function, thyroid imbalance and copper and zinc deficiencies should all be tested for. The last thing you need is an antidepressant masking or messing with this.”

The Physicians Desk Reference also warns that Paxil can be secreted through breast milk.

Ms. Jan Eastgate, International President of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, a psychiatric watchdog established by the Church of Scientology, says, “This is not a celebrity issue; it’s about the failure of psychiatrists and doctors that have bought into psychiatric marketing of PPD as a mental ‘disorder’ to inform women about the dangers of these drugs despite the FDA issuing very strong drug warnings.”

My daughter's best friend is attending a Youth for Human Rights conference in England this summer. It is a little scary, I think, for the to travel to England following the horrible terrorist attacks there this week. However, it is so important - human rights is a vastly important subject, and I think it's more important every day.

There is a surprisingly strong connection between psychiatry and the creation of terrorists, actually. Many people who are aware of psychiatric abuses like rape of women and children on the psychiatrist's couch, and insurance fraud, are not aware that there is actually psychiatric influence behind many terrorist situations.

Exposé documents psychiatric role in making of terrorists

The Church of Scientology International’s Freedom investigative journal has received an award of excellence from the nation’s largest religious communications group. Freedom senior editor Thomas G. Whittle accepted the DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Award of Excellence in periodical writing from the Religion Communicators Council (RCC), which held its annual conference in Indianapolis April 24-26. Honored was Whittle’s “Behind the Terror” exposé, co-authored with Freedom staffer Linda Amato.

The summer 2002 Freedom cover story probed the role of drugs and coercive psychiatric techniques in al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations. It exposed how drugs, hypnosis and other psychiatric means serve to manipulate human behavior and create programmed killers. One source interviewed for the article, Colin Ross, M.D., author of Bluebird: Deliberate Creation of Multiple Personality by Psychiatrists, charged that “terrorist organizations and governments around the world are using these techniques, right up to the present.”

“Psychiatric drugging and coercive techniques are capable of thoroughly altering a person’s behavior or altering his sanity,” said Whittle. “The degree to which such methods have permeated and shaped terrorist networks is only now beginning to come to light — along with the extent to which political and ethnic agendas have motivated so-called ‘religious’ conflicts.”

The RCC’s “Crossroads of Faith” convention drew attendees from diverse faith groups across the country. Keynote speaker Rev. Robert Edgar, general secretary of the National Council of Churches, opened the general sessions by encouraging religious groups to seize the reins of environmental stewardship, noting that “our care for the Earth is a part of who we are as religious people.”

In a second keynote address, Dr. Sayyid Syeed, secretary general of the Islamic Society of North America, challenged RCC members to “create an environment where there is respect of religion and where each religion is called upon to contribute to the spirituality” of the people. Calling the United States a country that can be proud of its religious legacies, Syeed encouraged his audience “to live in coexistence, to live in a pluralistic democracy and to live together and practice freely our religion and our faith.”

On psychiatric abuse of human rights:

Backed by pro-drug advocates, the dangerous club drug ecstasy is being tested on patients in therapy sessions

(PRWEB) May 25, 2005 -- The connection between psychiatry and drugs is not new. In fact, many psychiatric diagnoses call for drugs as part of their treatment protocol. Drug use in the psychiatric community has been around for decades, including experimental uses of everything from amphetamines and antidepressants for kids to the early exploration of LSD.

Today the trend continues and the latest abhorrence comes from a psychiatrist in South Carolina who is using the illegal drug ecstasy (MDMA) in a study of people who’ve had difficult situations in life and are having trouble dealing with them. A label has been created for these symptoms, which if looked at closely enough could actually include the majority of the world’s population at one point or another in their lives.

The study is being backed by a pro-drug advocacy group in Florida whose leader confessed to the St. Petersburg Times that he has used ecstasy many times, including recently.

Ecstasy is a dangerous drug with psychedelic and amphetamine components and was first synthesized by a pharmaceutical company in the early 1900’s. Though the drug was largely promoted by the psychiatric community for its ‘therapeutic qualities,’ it was finally made illegal in 1985 due to increasing abuse and harmful effects.

Use of the illegal drug in the United States by teenagers and young adults surged around the turn of the century but it has declined over the last few years.

Narconon Arrowhead, a highly successful drug education and rehabilitation program based on the drug-free methodology of L. Ron Hubbard, aligns with organizations that promote abstinence through drug prevention. Narconon Arrowhead stresses the fact that ecstasy use is dangerous, and that all drugs have side effects.

Ecstasy is a Schedule I controlled substance categorized by the Drug Enforcement Administration, meaning that it has been declared to have no medical use. Ecstasy is extremely damaging and withdrawal symptoms include severe depression. Other side effects include hyperthermia, involuntary teeth clenching, altered perceptions and a false sense of empathy.

Every person in America is affected by drug use, whether by paying for public health costs or due to themselves or a family member becoming addicted. The fact that some people insist on promoting dangerous drugs, regardless of any supposed value, sends the wrong message to our nation’s youth.

Florence, Italy (PRWEB) June 15, 2005 -- Denis Shuttleworth was 27 when he first entered the ancient gates of Florence, Italy in 1945. As gunfire still rattled between the warring nations of Europe, this South African soldier quietly fell in love with the city of Michelangelo and Da Vinci. Now 87 years old, Shuttleworth is revisiting the city to accept an award at the Taglia Corto “Human Rights” Film Festival, on behalf of his 20-year-old grandson, Taron Lexton.

In 2004, Lexton directed a 5 minute short film, called “United,” which has since been making waves at film festivals around the world. Lexton circumnavigated the globe for the film, shooting in 14 countries, with the help of 2000 volunteers. In August 2004, it had its official world premiere inside the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The film, aimed at teaching kids about human rights, has been praised by such names as the Prince of Monaco, the Undersecretary of the United Nations, and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. With 10 official selections and 3 wins under its belt, “United” is fast becoming an international sensation.

All of which makes Denis Shuttleworth a very proud grandfather.

When Lexton heard that “United” had won the Best Human Rights Video Award at the Taglia Corto Festival in Florence, he was thrilled—but quickly realized he would not be able to attend the awards ceremony, because he was shooting another film during that time.

So Lexton, a Los Angeles resident, called up his world-traveling grandfather, Shuttleworth, a Denmark resident, to see if he might be able to travel to Italy and receive the award on Lexton’s behalf.

“That was one of the easiest decisions of my life,” quips Shuttleworth with a jovial smirk.

The prestigious Taglia Corto “Human Rights” Film Festival was held in the Palazzio Vecchio in Florence. The Mayor of Florence, the Florence City Councilor of Culture, a UNESCO Dignitary, the Vice-President of Cinema Committee and other authorities participated. Alessio Della Valle is the founder and director of the prestigious festival which is co-organized by UNESCO. Maurizio del Bianco from the Scientology Celebrity Center in Florence and members of Youth for Human Rights International presented the Mayor and other dignitaries with copies of the United music video.

The film, “United,” was produced by TXL Films in coordination with Shuttleworth Leadership Society International (SLSI) for Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI). The purpose of YHRI is to teach kids about human rights.

It may be fate, or merely irony, that just two years ago Lexton himself traveled to the ancient city of Florence as a college student at Los Angeles Valley College. Just like his grandfather, he fell in love with the city and swore he would return.

“I guess I beat him to it,” says Shuttleworth. “Yet how convenient that I returned on his behalf!”

The award ceremony took place Sunday, June 12, at 4pm, inside the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

Rwandan Genocide Survivor Commends Human Rights Education Effort

Teens in dozens of countries who work with Youth for Human Rights International, an educational program adopted by the Church of Scientology International, were publicly honored at a special service at the Church of Scientology of New York headquarters last weekend.

(PRWEB) May 29, 2005 -- The group's work in human right's education was commended in a letter from Ms. Imaculee Ilibigaze, an executive in the United Nations Development Program. Ms. Ilibigaze is a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, and now helps the UN evaluate the effectiveness of their programs.

"This is a woman who knows firsthand the disastrous results when people lose respect for one another and then for their rights," said Rev. John Carmichael, who led the service.

Ms. Ilibigaze was unable to attend in person, so the letter was read and presented by Mr. Wilfrid Grey, a respected authority on the United Nations and author of the book, “UN Jigsaw.”

The letter he presented read, in part:

"This is to commend you for your vital actions on behalf of human rights education, in particular to make better known the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

"I can think of no more important action for peace, and for aiding the respect we must each have for one another, than making these rights known and applied."

"The youth that are part of your organization deserve all possible help and encouragement in their work in their home countries.

"To them and those who help organize them, may they continue and increase their efforts, and may those efforts bear the sweetest fruit possible: peace between individuals, among groups, and among nations."

Receiving the award on behalf of Youth for Human Rights International was Ms. Hannah Mets, head of the YHRI Manhattan branch.

NAACP Honours L. Ron Hubbard, Heber Jentzsch, and Isaac Hayes

There may be no civil rights organization as accomplished as the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP), which in its 88 years endured many hardships to now emerge with more than a half-million members in countries as diverse as the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Spain and Japan – bigger and stronger than ever.

Yet the matter which was foremost in the mind of NAACP President Kweisi Mfume as he spoke to the delegates at the NAACP 1997 Western Regional Conference in Los Angeles, California was not what has been achieved but what the organization must now become.

“We must be an organization judged not by the words we say,” said the five-term U.S. Congressman and chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus who resigned his elected office to become the President and CEO of the NAACP, “but by the deeds that we do. These are not the days to do less, but to do more.”

He noted that the organization must be one of effective action against all things that stand for “discrimination, bigotry, second-class citizenship and all of that other foolishness,” but he also called for members to explore different approaches to addressing these problems and to do things which, even if unpopular, bring results and change. “The road less travelled may still seem less certain, but it is also often the one of greater reward.”

It was in that vein – seeking effective action and those who carry it forward – that the NAACP Western Region presented special awards to individuals who are bringing first-class citizenship within reach for all. Rather than given at annual affairs, such award presentations only occur when truly outstanding achievement warrants it.

President of the Church of Scientology International, Rev. Jentzsch stressed the importance of literacy as a solution to crime, drugs and moral decay.

In the presence of NAACP national board members, Regional Director Ernestine Peters and 300 NAACP leaders and members attending the NAACP Western Regional Conference, Rev. Jentzsch accepted the Roy Wilkins Outstanding Leadership award for the Church's work to establish and defend human rights.

He also accepted an award which came as a surprise to nearly all in the audience--one named after an NAACP co-founder who pioneered in the association’s work to bring equality and end human rights abuses. “This next award goes to the man behind this all,” said Ms. Peters, "a man who has made this all possible. A man who has done so much around the world to help our people and all people in all areas of life, all over the world. He is a true humanitarian who has forwarded literacy, education and civilization. I am very proud to present the NAACP Doctor W.E.B. Du Bois Outstanding Leadership Award to the late L. Ron Hubbard."

Rev. Jentzsch received the award on Mr. Hubbard’s behalf. In his acceptance speech, Rev. Jentzsch stressed the importance of literacy as a solution to crime, drugs and moral decay, “which are the fertile ground for racism, conflict and the destruction of human rights.”

The Church has established and supports volunteer literacy programs throughout the United States and other nations. The best-known program started in Compton, California, after the 1992 Los Angeles riots and rapidly grew into the World Literacy Crusade which has gained international prominence for bringing reading and study skills to thousands.

The man who introduced Rev. Jentzsch to the assembled audience, Rev. Alfreddie Johnson, was uniquely qualified to speak on this subject, being co-founder and director of the World Literacy Crusade. “The Crusade was born from the ashes of the 1992 Los Angeles riots,” he said. “Rev. Jentzsch was there and he helped us realize that we could do so much more to re-build our communities and our people and emerge stronger than before, through addressing one of the root causes behind the social problems we were faced with.”

Legendary performer and composer Isaac Hayes, a true leader for the African-American community and international spokesperson for the World Literacy Crusade, addressed the conference telephonically from New York.

Hayes spoke to congratulate Rev. Jentzsch, but also to support the innovative program which he helped to bring to then riot-torn Los Angeles and which is now the centerpiece of Rev. Johnson’s World Literacy Crusade: “My real concern is education. Our people have been held down too long. They have been given all kinds of tags, by those who want us to believe that we cannot achieve. The study technology developed by L. Ron Hubbard offers a workable answer. I have been around the country helping to put together a number of programs that are helping our people learn how to learn.” Hayes has been an active and vocal supporter of and spokesman for the Crusade.

For his many contributions to advancing the cause of human rights and improving education and living standards for his people, there was another surprise presentation: Isaac Hayes was honoured with the NAACP’s James Weldon Johnson award.

Rev. Jentzsch said that he was “deeply touched and honoured” by his award, which acknowledged, among other contributions, the Church’s work to vindicate civil rights in the 1970s and his exposure of involuntary experimentation and other abuses of minorities in the name of “mental health.” “This is an especially great honour, as the NAACP is an organization to which all Americans and all free people are indebted,” he added. “By fighting and winning the battles you have taken on, you have brought a future to so many people of all creeds and colours.”

But the message he stressed in accepting the award was appropriately trained on the future, not the past. “The World Literacy Crusade and its affiliated groups have expanded to more than 30 programs in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Canada and elsewhere,” he said, “and with their growth comes ever-greater opportunity to vanquish illiteracy and ignorance everywhere.

“As we move into the 21st century it is time that all peoples be given the opportunity to achieve, and the opportunity to fulfill their true potential.”

As part of the tsunami relief efforts by Scientology Volunteers, Rohn and Vikki Walker from California arrived in Thailand and launched a new project.

Their first concern was the displaced people living in camps with little or no aid. Rohn and Vikki began working closely with the largest food distributor in Thailand to see that supplies made it out to these people. They are now receiving food and vitamins. The Walkers also taught the refugees in the camps how to administer Scientology assists and Dianetics techniques. This has been very successful with newly trained volunteers from the camps bringing spiritual relief to their own people.

Next, with the help of a Scientology mission in Thailand, Rohn and Vikki organized a large Dianetics workshop to train 85 new Scientology disaster relief volunteers. At the end of a long day of training these volunteers boarded a bus and traveled for 12 hours overnight. Their destination was a refugee camp in Phang Nga province in southern Thailand. Putting their new skills to use, they helped over 150 tsunami survivors through their trauma.

Following this the Walkers held a second Dianetics workshop. The result was another two busloads containing 100 Scientology disaster relief volunteers. These buses also took these volunteers on their way to camp Plu Teow in the Phang Nga province.

Visiting another camp in Phang Nga, Rohn and his team taught a group of 32 Buddhist monks how to perform Scientology assists. Once trained the monks and the volunteer team started bringing relief to the people in this refugee camp. At the end of the day, the head of the camp called everyone to a meeting. After a moment of silence for those who had lost their lives in the tsunami, the residents publicly thanked Rohn and his team and acknowledged L. Ron Hubbard for developing a way to really help people.

Rohn and Vikki Walker’s mission is not over. They will continue to direct the training of volunteers from the south coast of Thailand in Karbi, to the island of Phi Phi.
